Chapter 16
Jared
We had both fallen asleep on the couch and I had no idea what time it was when I woke up to find Caitlin snuggled next to me. Her mouth half-open, her eyes fluttering slightly as if she was dreaming. Her right leg had curled up over mine and her right hand on my chest. I wanted to stay there forever, to just look at her and watch her sleep. The couch, while nice, was not the most comfortable of sleeping arrangements.
I wanted her to sleep and I didnât want to disturb her so I slowly moved away from her. Only to have her wake up and look at me with her eyes heavy with sleep and the lopsided grin I had seen on her face only one other time before.
âDonât go,â she said.
It was so unlike her to make such a request, or to look so vulnerable saying it. My heart tumbled a little at her words and the look on her face.
âI wonât. Water?â I asked.
âKitchen,â she said.
She rolled so she was lying on her stomach and spread out on the couch. I bent down and kissed the small of her back before going and getting some water for us. I drank my fill and brought a glass back for her only to find her sound asleep when I came back. I thought about finding a blanket and leaving her there. She actually looked peaceful and I didnât want to wake her. But she had asked me to stay, or at least not leave and I wasnât going to let that invitation slide.
I wanted to stay, I wanted to go to bed with her and hold her in my arms through the night and then make love to her again in the morning. It hadnât been my intention to practically screw her brains out in her living room, but I didnât regret it either. I had wanted to give her comfort, I wanted her to know that I was on her side. And yes, I wanted her more than I had ever wanted another woman in my entire life.
She hadnât needed me to be chivalrous. She wanted me, she wanted to forget and be with another human being who she was attracted to and was attracted to her. So, I gave her all that I had and then some. I wanted to give her more, all that she wanted, but first, I needed to let her sleep. Carefully, I moved her onto her back and lifted her into my arms. She stirred slightly as I did but then nestled her head into the crook of my neck. I kissed the top of her head and carried her to her bed.
It wasnât the easiest thing to move the bedspread and sheets so that I could put her in the bed but I managed it. When she was lying on the bed, I took one last loving look at her and then covered her up. I knew I should go and was debating if I should when she reached her hand up and tugged me towards her.
